Bone marrow transplant was performed on the 100th child in Malatya
In the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Department, which was established 7 years ago at Turgut Özal Medical Center, some diseases such as leukemia and Mediterranean anemia are treated.
The 100th transplant was performed in the center, which serves patients from many provinces such as Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Şanlıurfa, Bingöl, Bitlis and Adıyaman, as well as Malatya.
Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Center Manager Prof. Dr. Arzu Akyay told the AA correspondent that the centers established in 2017 carried out important and successful transplants.
Stating that their center has been providing transplants for 7 years without interruption, Akyay stated that they have performed bone marrow transplants on 100 children so far.
Expressing that bone marrow transplantation is needed in many diseases in pediatric hematology, Akyay said, "Our center is very important for the region because there is no other center in the east of Kayseri that performs pediatric bone marrow transplantation. Our transplant successes are also quite good. Our patients are discharged with full recovery. We are happy and proud to have left the 100th transplant behind." he said.
"Something miraculous"
Explaining that patients come to their center from both Malatya and almost all provinces in the east, Akyay continued as follows:
"Bone marrow transplantation is truly a miraculous thing. In organ transplantation, you give up one of your organs, but in bone marrow transplantation, even if you give the bone marrow as if you donate blood, the bone marrow replaces it again. In other words, you do not lose anything. In that sense, it is a method in which all people can be donors and can be a life for a person. Anyone can go to Red Crescent blood centers and donate 2 tubes of blood and become a donor."
